Ultrasound

Ultrasound testing is a procedure that sends high-frequency sound wave through parts of your body and converts them into images on a viewing screen. It is not used as an independent breast diagnostic and screening evaluation but to compliment other tests such as mammograms, highlighting specific areas where there may be a concern.

If an abnormality is found, an ultrasound test is the best way to find out if the area of concern is either fluid filled (such as a benign cyst) or solid (such as cancer or a benign fibroadenoma). This can help the doctor in further evaluating treatment options or whether a biopsy is required. Ultrasounds are also used to guide biopsy needles toward suspicious areas in the breast. Ultrasounds are often paired with mammograms when an initial concern is raised because the equipment is widely available and costs less than other tests. But since sonographs (the picture of body tissue formed by an ultrasound) are limited in diagnosing capabilities, other tests such as MRIs or biopsies are sometimes needed.

At Advanced Breast Care, we are dedicated to providing the most up to date diagnostic and surgical treatment for all types of breast disease, benign and malignant.
