MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a type of evaluative and diagnostic tool, often used in conjunction with mammograms to help provide better analysis of breast abnormalities. MRIs use a combination of radio waves and strong magnets to produce high detail scans, eliminating the worry often associated with radiation through x-ray based tests. Often a contrast material is put in a vein right before the procedure to allow better scan analysis.

Typically, MRIs are used as diagnostic tools for doctors to evaluate areas of concern found on either a breast exam or mammogram. They are also employed in evaluating diagnosed tumors as well as scan for possible cancer in the other breast or nearby lymph nodes. Sometimes they are used in conjunction with mammograms for women at high risk for evaluative purposes, but this is not a recommended practice for the majority of women receiving breast examinations due to high cost of operation and analysis.

After breast surgery and treatment, MRIs serve a useful role in monitoring the return of cancer or to scan other parts of the body where cancer is known or suspected to have metastasized (spread). These scans play an important role in early detection and treatment especially if abnormal symptoms are experienced such as new weakness, numbness or pain.

At Advanced Breast Care, we are dedicated to providing the most up to date diagnostic and surgical treatment for all types of breast disease, benign and malignant.
